Timing Belt / Chain Service
Repairs & Replacement
A timing belt’s function is to control the timing of the engine valves. The timing belt a.k.a. cam belt is the most commonly used today and replaces the older timing chain. However, there are still some vehicles today that utilize a timing chain.

How a timing belt works
The timing belt connects the crankshaft to the camshaft(s) which in turn controls the opening and closing of the engine valves. Additionally, the timing belt may drive other engine parts such as the water pump. While the serpentine belt in the car is usually easily visible, the timing belt / chain typically has a cover of some sort that must be removed for replacement or inspection.
Timing belt’s usually should be replaced between 60,000 and 100,000 miles. (You can always look at your owner’s manual for your vehicle’s particular maintenance schedule). A timing chain should be replaced between 40,000 and 100,000 miles, or at the first sign of disrepair. If you are uncertain whether your vehicle has a timing belt or a timing chain, we will be happy to inspect your vehicle to let you know.
Timing chain’s can last a very long time if they are properly cared for. One of the major factors in how long your timing chain will last is how frequently you change your oil. Timing chains look similar to a bicycle chain and are lubricated by your engine’s oil. Therefore, if you do not change your oil frequently these chains can become damaged more quickly.
